To Gather

'to gather'
Mural By: Curtia Wright

"Wrapped on the largest mural I’ve done in my career a couple of weeks ago! I can’t begin to tell you how much of a dream this was to be a part of. At the beginning of the year I was reached out to by @lndmrk to create a mural for @footlockercanada and @converse about my interpretation of what Black Joy meant to me. When asked this I immediately thought about images of family and friends gathered together sharing laughs, food, dancing and in general enjoying each other's company. This is something that I missed most the past two years in isolation, I wanted this piece to be homage to Black music, dance and intergenerational bonding. I thought of the local creative community and wanted to represent musicians and artists. I depicted Portia White who was the first Black Canadian concert singer to win international acclaim in the 1940s and Jackie Shane an American soul singer who rose to prominence in Toronto in the 1960s (please listen to “Any Other Way”!!). Thank you to my team of incredible artists:
